DThe US government has imposed new sanctions on Iranian officials and leaders of the Iranian security forces. Entry bans have been put in place against eleven Iranian government employees, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Monday. They are said to be responsible or complicit in the ill-treatment, arrest or murder of peaceful protesters, the statement said.

The US Treasury also imposed sanctions on three senior leaders of the Revolutionary Guards, the head of a police force in Tehran and Iran’s new Internet censorship minister. The punitive measures are related to the brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran.

One consequence of the sanctions is that any assets of those affected will be frozen in the US – US citizens will be prohibited from doing business with them. International business is usually made much more difficult for those affected by the sanctions, because financial flows that flow through the USA are also affected.

The new sanctions were imposed in line with Britain, it said. The European Union had previously imposed sanctions on the mobile operator Ariantel. The Iranian company is actively using cyber products to monitor, locate and intercept calls and other mobile communications activities of its users at the government’s request, according to a decision adopted at a foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.
