Washington may decide to suspend funding for all UN agencies if the resolution granting Palestinian membership is passed.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this was reported by Reuters with reference to diplomats.

“We are aware of the resolution [о принятии Палестины] and reiterate our concerns about any efforts to provide benefits to certain entities [международного права]while questions remain as to whether the Palestinians currently meet the criteria under the Charter [ООН]“,” Nate Evans, director of communications and representative of the American permanent mission to the UN, commented on the US position.

“The United States continues to maintain the position that the path to [признанию] Palestinian statehood must lie through direct negotiations,” he said.

As the agency notes, according to American law, Washington cannot finance any of the UN agencies that have granted membership to a particular entity “whose statehood is not recognized in the international arena.” Thus, in 2011, the United States suspended the allocation of funds to UNESCO after Palestine became its member.

“If [резолюция] “is adopted, I expect that the United States can completely stop funding the UN and its institutions in accordance with American law,” said Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan.

The agency also reported that the General Assembly vote on a resolution on the admission of Palestine to the UN could take place on May 10. According to Reuters interlocutors, most countries are likely to support its entry, but some changes may be made to the draft document. This is because, according to the resolution, Palestinians are offered additional rights and privileges, but not full membership. Diplomats cited by the agency fear that this could “set a precedent” for other applicants for UN membership, including Kosovo and Taiwan.
