München A hundred times faster than WLAN and also tap-proof: The US military is already using the Light Fidelity (LiFi) transmission technology developed by German Professor Harald Haas. “LiFi protects life in action,” says the radio engineer.

The European Patent Office has nominated Frank, who teaches in Edinburgh, Scotland, for the “Inventor of the Year” award. The 55-year-old hopes that the attention it will bring will pave the way for his process into the mass market. “Because from a technical point of view, the hurdles have been eliminated,” he says.

Haas founded Pure LiFi eleven years ago. He is already selling the first systems. In the future, he wants to license the know-how so that one day LiFi could be used in every smartphone – and also in every lamp on the ceiling. The highlight: LiFi can transmit data at more than 100 gigabits per second – far exceeding today’s high-speed Internet.
