Table of Contents
The United States men’s hockey team has unveiled a 28-player preliminary roster as they aim for an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal at the World Junior Championship, which will be hosted on American ice this year. The proclamation, made on Monday, signals the start of a training camp scheduled for December 15-23 in Duluth, Minnesota, before the team is trimmed to 25 players for the tournament itself, taking place from December 26 to January 5 in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Core Returns and NHL Talent
The Americans will lean on experience, bringing back nine players from last year’s prosperous squad. Leading the charge is Cole Hutson, the reigning World Junior Championship scoring leader. The team boasts significant NHL draft pedigree, featuring eight players who were selected in the first round of the NHL Draft, including standouts James Hagens, Cole Eiserman, and Will Horcoff.
NCAA Stars Leading the Way
Several players are already making waves in the NCAA this season. Horcoff, currently playing for the University of Michigan and a prospect for the Pittsburgh penguins, and Max Plante of Minnesota-Duluth,drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, are currently tied for the NCAA scoring lead. Hagens, a Boston Bruins pick, has demonstrated remarkable offensive capabilities with nine goals and seven assists in 14 games for Boston College. Eiserman, selected by the New York Islanders, has tallied seven goals and three assists in just 10 games for Boston University. Hutson, a defenceman and brother of Montreal Canadiens player Lane Hutson, has also been a key offensive contributor, recording seven goals and 11 assists in 15 games for Boston University.
Goaltending Question Marks and Future Prospects
A significant question mark for the team lies in net, as Michigan State star Trey Augustine has aged out of eligibility. the team will evaluate Caleb Heil (Madison, USHL), AJ Reyelts (penticton, WHL), and Nick Kempf (Notre Dame, NCAA) during the training camp to determine who will guard the crease.Looking ahead, 2026 draft eligibles Blake Fiddler (Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL), Seattle Kraken (Round 2, 2025)), Logan Hensler (Wisconsin (NCAA), Ottawa Senators (Round 1, 2025)), Chase Reid (Sault ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)), and Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen (Michigan (NCAA)) will be vying for a spot on the team. Other notable prospects include Adam Kleber (Minnesota-Duluth (NCAA), Buffalo sabres (Round 2, 2024)), Luke Osburn (Wisconsin (NCAA), Buffalo Sabres (Round 4, 2024)), and Caleb Heil (Madison Capitals (USHL), Tampa Bay Lightning (Round 7, 2025)).
