WASHINGTON – American consumers will soon have a clearer way to identify meat, poultry, and egg products entirely sourced from the United States, thanks to a fresh voluntary labeling standard now being actively promoted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The “Product of USA” label, which went into effect January 1, 2026, aims to increase transparency in the food supply chain and bolster support for domestic producers, a move officials say will strengthen the nation’s agricultural security.
The initiative, announced on National Agriculture Day by USDA Secretary Brooke L. Rollins, isn’t simply about patriotism, but about restoring trust and leveling the playing field for American ranchers, and farmers. For years, imported products were able to carry a “Product of USA” claim after undergoing minimal processing within the country, a practice that Secretary Rollins described as undermining the integrity of the label and disadvantaging domestic producers.
“American consumers aim for to support America by buying American, and this label will strengthen our food supply chain through transparency, fairness, and trust,” Secretary Rollins said in a statement. The new standard requires that products bearing the “Product of USA” label originate from animals born, raised, harvested, and processed entirely within the United States. Companies choosing to use the label must meet this verifiable requirement.
Addressing Challenges in the American Beef Industry
The rollout of the “Product of USA” label comes at a critical time for American agriculture. The USDA released a plan in October 2025 to fortify the American beef industry, acknowledging significant challenges facing ranchers. Since 2017, the United States has lost over 17% of its family farms – more than 100,000 operations – and the national cattle herd has dwindled to its lowest level in 75 years, even as consumer demand for beef has increased by 9% over the past decade.
Small Business Administrator Loeffler emphasized the importance of supporting American producers, stating, “When we choose to purchase from American producers, we secure a superior product while supporting the hardworking family farms who put it all on the line every day to feed, clothe, and fuel our nation.” She framed the initiative as a reversal of years of “unfair competition and massive red tape” that she said had previously stifled domestic agriculture.
Beyond Beef: Impact on Poultry and Eggs
While the USDA’s recent plan specifically focused on the beef industry, the “Product of USA” labeling standard extends to poultry and egg products as well. This broader application is intended to provide consumers with consistent information across all three major protein sources. Health and Human Services Secretary Kennedy highlighted the label’s role in empowering consumers, stating it “puts American producers first, gives families clear, honest information, and empowers them to choose food raised right here at home.”
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also weighed in, with Administrator Zeldin noting the label’s connection to national security and rural prosperity. “America’s farmers and ranchers are key to our national security, sustaining rural communities and keeping our food supply resilient,” Zeldin said. He added that the label “rewards American farmers and ranchers who grow, raise, and process their products in the U.S., while giving consumers confidence they are supporting American agriculture.”
Voluntary, But Verifiable: How the Label Works
The “Product of USA” label is voluntary, meaning producers aren’t required to use it. Yet, those who do must adhere to strict guidelines. The USDA has established a verification process to ensure that products claiming to be “Product of USA” meet the standard of being entirely sourced and processed within the country. This verification process is designed to prevent misleading claims and maintain consumer confidence.
North Dakota Senator Hoeven underscored the benefits for ranchers, stating, “A ‘Product of USA’ label benefits our ranchers and provides transparency and confidence for consumers.” He praised Secretary Rollins and the administration for their commitment to supporting farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.
The USDA is currently conducting a national public awareness campaign to inform producers about the new labeling standard and the verification process. Information is available to producers and consumers alike at productofusa.gov.
Looking Ahead: Enforcement and Consumer Awareness
The success of the “Product of USA” label hinges on both robust enforcement of the standard and widespread consumer awareness. The USDA has indicated it will be actively monitoring the use of the label to ensure compliance and address any instances of mislabeling. The agency is also working to educate consumers about what the label means and how they can use it to support American agriculture.
The initiative represents a broader effort to strengthen the U.S. Food supply chain and promote domestic production. As the USDA continues to implement the “Product of USA” label and monitor its impact, the next key step will be assessing the initial uptake by producers and gauging consumer response in the coming months. The agency is expected to release preliminary data on label usage and consumer awareness by the end of 2026.
