USF Women’s Basketball Hosts Navy in Annual Holiday Celebration Game

The University of South Florida women’s basketball team aims to continue its dominant home form as it welcomes Navy to the Yuengling Center on Sunday, December 21, for a 1 p.m. tip-off broadcast on ESPN+. The Bulls, currently 6-6 on the season, will face the Midshipmen, who hold a 6-4 record.

The contest will be highlighted as the annual Holiday Celebration game, offering fans a long-sleeve holiday shirt while supplies last. A beloved tradition, the Teddy Bear Toss, will also take place during halftime, encouraging fans to donate teddy bears to those in need.

Bulls’ Home Court Advantage

USF has established a formidable presence at the Yuengling Center, boasting a 55-5 record (.916 winning percentage) in non-conference games since the beginning of the 2017-18 season. This record stands as the best in the American Athletic Conference during that period and ranks 15th nationally among all Division I schools with at least 10 non-conference home games played. The team is looking to secure its sixth non-conference victory at home, marking the fourth consecutive season with at least six such wins.

First Meeting for South Florida and Navy

Sunday’s matchup will represent the first-ever meeting between the South Florida Bulls and the Navy Midshipmen women’s basketball programs.

Key Players to Watch

L’or Mputu continues to be a rebounding force for the Bulls, having recorded at least four rebounds and one made field goal in 35 consecutive games – the 12th-longest active streak in Division I women’s basketball. Only Maria Jesperson (38 games from 2017-2018) and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (35 games from 2022-2023) have had longer streaks for USF this century. Mputu currently leads the team with an average of 8.5 rebounds per game.

Stefanie Ingram is making a national impact, currently tied for 22nd in the NCAA with 66 assists, leading the American Athletic Conference in that category. Her 5.5 assists per game are tied for 29th in the nation and lead the conference. Ingram also paces the Bulls with 13 steals and contributes 10.3 points per game, making her a key all-around player.

Offensively, Edyn Battle leads the team with 14.2 points per game, while Katie Davidson is close behind, averaging 10.8 points per contest.

A Program Built on Success

The University of South Florida women’s basketball program, now under the leadership of interim head coach Michele Woods-Baxter, has a rich history spanning 25 seasons. The Bulls have secured 19 postseason tournament appearances, including 10 NCAA Tournament berths. The program has achieved 12 seasons with 20 or more wins, two WNIT Final Four appearances, and claimed the 2008-09 WNIT championship.
