A growing wave of sophisticated online fraud is targeting vacationers, with criminals luring victims off official booking platforms like Booking.com and onto messaging apps to steal thousands of dollars. Authorities are urging travelers to exercise extreme caution and stick to secure, established channels when arranging accommodations.
A recent case in Oppenheim, Germany, highlights the escalating threat. According to police reports from April 9, 2025, a resident lost nearly 4,000 euros after responding to an attractive accommodation offer initially discovered on Booking.com. The scam unfolded when the purported provider insisted on communicating exclusively via WhatsApp, ignoring inquiries made through the Booking.com platform itself.
From Attractive Offer to Financial Loss
The victim was directed via WhatsApp to an Italian bank account, where he transferred the full amount for the lodging. However, the offer vanished immediately after the payment was made, and subsequent attempts to contact the provider through WhatsApp went unanswered. This pattern, authorities say, is becoming increasingly common.
“Criminals are using more and more manipulated advertisements,” a senior official stated, “specifically leading potential vacationers to external communication channels where they can be more easily defrauded.”
The tactic relies on exploiting a common desire for a relaxing vacation, preying on the tendency to become less vigilant when anticipating leisure time. As one analyst noted, “Fraudsters capitalize on our desire to unwind, making us more susceptible to scams.”
Hotel Data Breaches Amplify Risk
The threat extends beyond individual travelers. A separate incident on June 6, 2025, involved the V8 Hotel in Böblingen, Germany, which fell victim to a data breach. Hackers gained access to guest information and used it to send fraudulent payment requests via Booking.com, impersonating the hotel.
