A strike at the Intermarché de Champigny-sur- Marne is a first! A majority of employees started this movement on Thursday August 31 and has since occupied the small square opposite this neighborhood supermarket. A long list of demands appears on the leaflet of the checkout hostesses and other department storekeepers. They demand “better wages”, “more humanity in the management of personnel”, “the cessation of psychological pressures” or even “heating in winter”.
The supermarket continues to receive customers thanks to student or professional contracts, not on strike, and to the management which takes turns at the checkouts, while “70 to 80% of full-time and permanent staff are on strike” according to the CGT union .
“For several years, the local management of the store has violated our rights, does not respect the collective agreement, insists Michelle Mango, CGT union official, who has worked in this store, an independent franchisee, for 23 years. The consequences are such that since 2019 more than thirty people have resigned, the newcomers are not holding out, even the old ones are looking to go elsewhere. Management does not hear our suffering. And the employees recount the recent suicide attempt of one of their own, from the roof of the store, which shocked them all.
“A contemptuous management” for the local CGT union
Employees are supported in this battle for their working conditions by the local CGT union in Champigny. “I have never seen such contemptuous management of employees in a supermarket, notes Laurence Viallefont, general secretary of the local union. Fortunately, the employees support each other and the customers are understanding. »
For his part, the new director, who took over a loss-making supermarket in January 2020, defends a new commercial dynamism. “We carried out work worth 1.45 million euros and the figures are on the rise, underlines Joffrey Lahaye, who deplores the stalemate in the conflict despite three meetings with the employees. From this year, thanks to the bonus system that we have implemented, employees will be able to earn more. »
The customers, themselves, show themselves to be very supportive of the strikers, not hesitating to fill the strike fund, despite their low incomes. “We see that it lacks personnel and that they are suffering, testifies Joëlle, a customer of this Intermarché for 12 years. The employees are very pleasant, they go out of their way and at the price we pay for our shopping, they deserve decent salaries. »
