Aemet, Spain’s national weather service, has issued a stark warning for the Valencian Community, forecasting a dramatic shift in weather conditions from sunny skies to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and potentially hazardous sea conditions in the coming days. Residents are urged to prepare for significant disruptions as the region braces for what officials are calling a potentially adverse weather episode.
Transition Day Friday, January 16th
Friday, January 16th, will serve as a transitional period before the arrival of the main storm system. Aemet predicts generally cloudy skies throughout the Valencian Community, with some intervals of sunshine expected in the southern part of Alicante. A slight chance of weak rainfall exists, particularly inland, though precipitation is expected to be minimal along the coast. Winds will initially blow lightly from the west, shifting to the south during the day and becoming variable by evening.
Complicated Conditions Expected Saturday
Saturday will see a marked deterioration in conditions. Very cloudy skies and rainfall are forecast for Castellón and the Marina Alta region, with the northern coast of Castellón potentially experiencing locally strong rainfall and thunderstorms. While rainfall is expected to be weaker and more isolated elsewhere, the risk remains. Notably, the snow level is expected to drop to between 1,000 and 1,200 meters in the Els Ports area.
Sunday’s Forecast: Decreasing Clouds, Persistent Rain in the North
On Sunday, January 18th, skies are expected to gradually clear from south to north. However, precipitation is still anticipated, particularly in the north of Castellón, where it may be persistent. The snow level will remain around 1,000-1,200 meters in Els Ports. Winds will be light and variable, shifting to a northerly component in the afternoon.
Monday and Tuesday: Peak of the Storm
The most significant impacts from this weather system are anticipated on Monday, January 19th, and Tuesday, January 20th. Aemet has issued a special informative note warning of “very persistent and locally strong rainfall, intense winds and sea storms with strong waves” across the Mediterranean area, with a particular focus on the Valencian Community and the eastern and southern regions of Catalonia.
The agency believes the most intense and persistent rainfall will initially impact eastern Catalonia on Monday, before shifting towards the Ebro valley, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands on Tuesday. The largest accumulations of rainfall are expected in the windward areas of coastal and pre-coastal mountain ranges, potentially impacting river headwaters and low-lying areas.
Potential for Damage and Disruption
Aemet reports that the severe weather could cause damage to promenades and coastal areas, as well as the potential for falling branches or trees and damage to vulnerable architectural structures. The heavy rains also raise concerns about river floods and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Gradual Improvement Expected from Wednesday
Conditions are expected to improve from Wednesday, January 21st, as rainfall intensity decreases and the sea storm begins to subside. However, Aemet cautions that there is “high uncertainty” regarding the precise areas most affected by rainfall, and residents are advised to stay informed and monitor forecast updates closely in the coming days.
