A man accused of fatally shooting his wife in Vallejo, California, has been arrested in Pennsylvania following a police pursuit, authorities announced Thursday. The arrest of Zheer Queja Malassab, 45, concludes a multi-state search that began after concerns were raised about the well-being of the victim.
Initial Concerns and Welfare Check
The investigation began on Tuesday when the Vallejo Police Department received a call from a concerned individual regarding their coworker’s unexplained absence from work. The caller expressed worry, particularly in light of a recent argument the coworker had with her husband. According to officials, the coworker revealed to officers that the missing woman had sought refuge at a friend’s home after her husband had allegedly threatened to kill her.
Responding officers immediately conducted a welfare check at the missing person’s apartment complex, but received no response. Authorities then canvassed the surrounding area and attempted to contact both the missing woman and her husband via phone, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Discovery and Arrest
The situation escalated on Wednesday at approximately 5:35 p.m. when a maintenance worker entered the missing person’s apartment and discovered her unresponsive. Emergency services were immediately called, and authorities confirmed the victim had suffered at least one gunshot wound and succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators quickly identified Malassab as the primary suspect in the homicide. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and initiated a search for the victim’s vehicle, which was later determined to have traveled to Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania State Police located the vehicle and attempted a felony traffic stop, but Malassab refused to comply, initiating a pursuit. Authorities stated that Malassab was eventually forced to stop and surrendered to police custody. Following his arrest, Malassab reportedly confessed to shooting his wife after being read his Miranda rights.
