The mayor of Péage-de-Roussillon (Isère), André Mondange, filed a complaint after being physically attacked in the Avignon sector during the night from Thursday to Friday, we learned on Saturday from the prefecture of Isère.

This mayor (various left) “was attacked in the Avignon sector on the night of December 21 to 22 while he was traveling in a private setting”, indicated the prefecture without further details on the place or time of the attack.

“He wore a cockade and people came to ask him what the badge he wore meant, to which he then replied that it was a mayor’s badge,” continues the same source. In reaction, “individuals then attacked him and the people who were with him, making racist comments”.

Au Dauphiné Libéré, André Mondange specified that the alleged attackers attacked his daughter, mixed race and aged 20. “They said she wasn’t legitimate to be in France. One of them shouted that he was an identity nationalist,” he explained to the local newspaper.

Increasing violence against elected officials

“There was a fight, blows were thrown, the mayor was injured. He filed a complaint,” the prefecture also indicated, specifying that “the duty sub-prefect contacted him” and that “support was put in place”.

The prefect of Isère, Louis Laugier, condemned “firmly the aggression of André Mondange” in a message published on X (formerly Twitter). He “provides his full support to the mayor and his loved ones in the face of this ordeal, in the face of this unacceptable act”.

The deputy for Isère Yannick Neuder (LR) for his part affirmed in a message published on his Facebook account that “the mayor is very affected by the racist nature of the attack initially targeting his relatives” and to have “immediately made contact with him “. His message on X is accompanied by a photograph of the chosen one, his face swollen.

Violence against elected officials is a sensitive subject which has gained momentum in recent months. According to the Ministry of the Interior, attacks against elected officials are expected to increase by 15% in 2023, after an increase of 32% last year.
