GREENVILLE, S.C. – The VCU Rams’ remarkable 2025-26 season came to an end Saturday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena, falling to the third-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini 76-55 in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The loss concludes a year that saw VCU achieve 28 wins, tied for the second-most in program history, and a thrilling first-round victory over North Carolina. While sophomore guard Terrence Hill Jr. Led the Rams with 17 points and seven rebounds, Illinois’ size and shooting proved too much to overcome in a game where VCU struggled to find its offensive rhythm.

The Rams, making their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance, entered the game with momentum after a stunning upset of UNC. However, Illinois, ranked 13th nationally, quickly established control, particularly on the boards. The Fighting Illini’s dominance in rebounding – a 45-29 advantage – and their ability to capitalize on turnovers (17-11 in points off turnovers) proved decisive. The game’s narrative shifted significantly in the first half, and VCU couldn’t recover.

Early Run Seals VCU’s Fate

VCU briefly held a lead at 28-26 after a basket by Hill Jr. With 3:09 remaining in the first half, capping a 15-3 run that ignited hope for an upset. But Illinois responded emphatically. Andrej Stojakovic, who finished with a game-high 21 points, scored the final nine points of the half, giving the Illini a 35-28 lead at the break. That momentum carried directly into the second half, as Illinois opened with a 15-4 blitz, extending their advantage to 50-32 with 13:24 left to play.

“They just started hitting shots,” VCU coach Mike Rhoades said in a post-game interview. “We had a couple of turnovers that led to effortless baskets for them, and they got going. It’s tough to arrive back from that when a team like Illinois is playing well.”

Shooting Struggles Hamper Rams’ Offense

VCU’s shooting woes were a significant factor in the loss. The Rams shot just 35% from the field (23-of-66), including a dismal 22% (7-of-32) from three-point range. Hill Jr., who had a career-high 34 points against North Carolina, struggled with his shot, going 7-of-16 from the field. Senior forward Barry Evans and junior guard Tyrell Ward added 11 points each, but they couldn’t compensate for the overall offensive struggles.

Illinois, in contrast, shot 48% from the field (28-of-58), demonstrating a more efficient offensive attack. Four Illini players scored in double figures, showcasing their balanced scoring threat. Stojakovic’s 21 points led the way, but Coleman Hawkins, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Marcus Domask also contributed significantly to the Illinois victory.

A Season to Remember for VCU

Despite the disappointing end, the 2025-26 season was a resounding success for VCU. The Rams’ 28 wins tied the second-highest total in program history, and their run to the NCAA Tournament’s second round generated significant excitement among fans. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display throughout the year, culminating in the dramatic first-round win over North Carolina.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team,” Rhoades added. “They fought hard all season, and they represented VCU with class and dignity. This is a group I’ll always remember.”

Looking Ahead

The loss marks the end of the road for VCU this season, but the program appears to be in a strong position for continued success. With a core of talented players returning, including Hill Jr., the Rams will look to build on this year’s accomplishments and contend for another NCAA Tournament berth in the 2026-27 season. The Atlantic 10 Conference tournament schedule for next season will be released in the fall, providing the next key date for VCU fans to circle on their calendars.

The Illinois Fighting Illini will advance to the Sweet Sixteen, where they will face the winner of the Iowa State-Washington State matchup. The full NCAA Tournament bracket is available on the NCAA’s official website.
