Vegetables and meat – Prices in the supermarket begin to fall

After dairy products, vegetables and meat are now also cheaper. Compared to 2022, however, the cost increase remains.

First rays of hope when shopping in the supermarket: “Since the beginning of 2023 we have reduced the prices of well over 300 products. We pass the reduced manufacturer prices on to our customers as quickly as possible,” explains Rewe boss Marcel Haraszti. The buyers negotiated hard every day to get the best possible price. The clever chicken schnitzel (500 g) was z. B. reduced by 4.42 percent, six Perschlingtaler Sonneneier by 15.04 percent.Own brands discountedSome customers also pay less at Spar. According to its own statements, the group therefore refrains from profit margins. Cutbacks are being made especially with the own brands. So costs z. B. S-Budget balsamic vinegar is now 23 percent less, toilet paper by 9 percent. Hofer has been selling dairy products up to 28 percent cheaper since the beginning of 2023; now the cheese prices have been pushed further down. Lidl lowered the prices for “normal” dairy products by up to 13 percent and organic by up to 10 percent. Compared to the previous year, however, the expenditure is still dramatically higher, according to Statistics Austria (see chart).Living in Austria remains expensiveDespite the cheaper prices, the cost of living in Austria is still high, 9.7 percent higher than in the previous year. The most important price drivers were housing, energy, restaurants and food shopping, according to data published by Statistics Austria on Wednesday. The inflation rate has thus risen again compared to the 9.2 percent in March. Looking only at the price increase between March and April, air travel and gas prices were the main factors.
