Venezuela and Guyana have been disputing the territory of Essequibo for more than 100 years, a piece of land that comprises more than two-thirds of Guyana’s territory and that Caracas considers to have been usurped during British colonialism. The International Court of Justice must rule if, as requested by the Guyanese authorities, the Arbitration Award of 1899 prevails, favorable to its border interests, while Venezuela requests a negotiation to determine where to establish the line of separation between both countries.
