The Foreign Ministry also published a message in honor of Neruda, whom it remembered as one of “the most prominent and influential artists of his century, the greatest poet of the 20th century.”
Neruda died on September 23, 1973 at the Santa María Clinic in Santiago, one day before going into exile in Mexico, where he could have become the great opponent of the dictator.
The death of the Chilean politician and diplomat has been investigated since 2011, when his driver and secretary, Manuel Araya, who died last June at the age of 77, publicly stated in an interview that the poet was poisoned by an injection in the abdomen by a secret agent of the Pinochet regime who posed as a doctor.
His testimony was the basis of the complaint filed by the Chilean Communist Party and supported by part of the writer’s family, but the investigation that was opened from it has not yet concluded.
Authorities, colleagues and friends of the poet, who was a close friend of Allende, remembered this Saturday his work and cultural and political legacy, in an emotional event held at the writer’s House Museum, located in the coastal town of Isla Negra, about 100 kilometers west of Santiago.
