The Venezuelan Foreign Minister announced the suspension of the activities of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in the country and ordered the departure of its employees within 72 hours, after criticism regarding the detention of lawyer Rocio San Miguel.
UNHCR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said: “We regret this announcement and are evaluating the next steps to be taken, and we continue to engage in dialogue with the authorities and other actors. Our guiding principle has been and continues to be to promote and protect the human rights of the Venezuelan people.”
