Alberto Barbera denies rumors about his resignation as artistic director of the Venice Film Festival. “I don’t know who spread this rumor, in fact I know. Why should I resign when I have a mandate that expires at the end of 2024? This hypothesis of early resignation does not exist”, Barbera said in the closing press conference of the 80th edition of the festival, underlining the record audience even without Hollywood stars.
“There are many reasons to be happy. We are happy with the fact that attendance has increased, the films have been considered of a high standard, almost all of them have gained attention and aroused curiosity and interest. Someone even complained that there were too many good films”, the artistic director said again, underlining: “The audience has changed radically, it is made up of young and very young people. I was stopped on the street when I was eighteen”.
“The verdict – he continued – was considered balanced and fair and finally there were no specious controversies. As always, the only ones concerned the presence of two or three contested directors. Evidently we could talk about positive things without seeking specious arguments as happened in the past.”
“How will we orient ourselves for the future? The calculations must be made with the films that will be there. Next year the choice will be conditioned by the duration of the strike, because if it were to last long we would find ourselves with a shortage of films,” Barbera stated.
