Venus Williams to Compete at ATX Open in Austin, Marking Return to WTA Tour
A seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, 45, has accepted a wild card entry into the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, later this month, signaling her continued commitment to professional tennis. The tournament will provide a key opportunity for Williams as she navigates a challenging return to the WTA Tour.
Williams initially rejoined the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz in July 2023 in Washington, D.C.,securing a victory over peyton Stearns in her opening match. However, she has since faced a string of six consecutive losses, presenting a clear hurdle in her comeback journey.
The start of the 2024 season brought further challenges, with defeats against Magda Linette in Auckland and Tatjana Maria in Hobart. At the Australian Open, Williams demonstrated resilience, claiming a set against Olga Danilovic before ultimately falling in a closely contested three-set match, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. Despite recent struggles in singles play, Williams has found success in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open alongside Leylah Fernandez. She has continued to compete in doubles this year, partnering with Elina Svitolina in Auckland and Ekaterina Alexandrova in Melbourne, though both pairings experienced first-round exits.
This marks Williams’ first appearance at the ATX Open, a WTA 250 tournament where she intends to compete in both singles and doubles. “I’m so excited to be heading to Austin and playing my first ATX Open,” Williams stated. “The city has such great energy and I’ve heard the fans are incredible. I’m looking forward to playing both singles and doubles in front of such a passionate tennis community.”
Williams will join a competitive field of american players, including reigning champion Jessica Pegula, Australian Open quarterfinalist and rising star Iva Jovic, last year’s runner-up McCartney Kessler, Ashlyn Krueger, and Stearns. The tournament holds particular importance for Stearns, 24, who secured the NCAA title for the University of Texas in 2022, making this a homecoming of sorts.
Also expected to participate is World No. 59 Eva Lys, currently recovering from a hyperextended right knee. The ATX Open, played on outdoor hard courts at the Westwood Country Club, is positioned as one of the first events in the WTA Tour’s Sunshine Swing, alongside the WTA 500 Merida Open in Mexico.
The tournament is scheduled to run from Monday, February 23, through Sunday, March 1, before the tour moves on to Indian Wells and then Miami.
