New York (CNN) – Verizon has confirmed that its cell line service is starting to be restored again following a massive outage affecting some of its wireless customers.
“Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has begun to be restored,” a Verizon spokesperson told CNN on Monday. “We know how much people depend on Verizon and we apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. “We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this issue.”
The outage appears to have started around 11 a.m. (Miami time), with approximately 100,000 customer reports in DownDetectora site that tracks complaints about service interruptions.
Complaints targeting the verified Verizon account at Many Verizon iPhone customers complained that their phones were stuck in “SOS” mode Monday morning, allowing only emergency satellite calls.
Verizon has 114.2 million subscribers in the United States.
While relatively infrequent, cell service outages have caused widespread headaches this year. In February, AT&T’s network was down for 11 hours, preventing many of its customers in the United States from making calls, sending text messages or accessing the Internet. AT&T said an initial review of the outage showed it may have been caused by a technical error introduced by an update to its network. In June and August the network was interrupted again for a few hours.
A telecommunications expert told CNN last month that network outages are usually caused by a combination of three problems: overloaded networks in major cities, software updates that have gotten out of control and various technical problems.
But telecom companies are notoriously secretive about the reasons for their outages. So if networks are down, especially for a few hours at a time, cell service providers are unlikely to say much about what went wrong.
This can be doubly frustrating for customers, many of whom rely on the networks to make a living, including rideshare drivers. They also allow people to access emergency services like 911. And they have connected the world to friends, family and colleagues, wherever they are.
