A family is grappling with the sudden and violent loss of a young man who they say died while attempting to shield a relative during a chaotic confrontation. The death of Emran Yousufi, 23, has left a void in a family that had only recently begun building a new life in Canada, transforming a routine Saturday evening into a scene of tragedy.
The incident occurred outside a Tim Hortons in north Oshawa, near the intersection of Highway 407 and Simcoe Street North. According to those close to the victim, the violence erupted without provocation, leading to a fatal stabbing that has since resulted in the arrest of a teenager. Durham Regional Police have since charged a 16-year-old from Brampton with second-degree murder in connection with the killing.
For those who knew Yousufi, the tragedy is compounded by the nature of the attack and the bravery he displayed in his final moments. His cousin, Abel Mohammadi, and a close friend, Ali Abdullah, describe a young man whose instinct was to protect others, even at the cost of his own life.
A sudden escalation of violence
The evening began normally for Yousufi, Mohammadi, and Abdullah as they spent time inside the restaurant. The atmosphere shifted abruptly when a group of five or six individuals arrived, wearing masks and playing loud music. The group specifically sought out Mohammadi, prompting him to step outside to address them.
What followed was a swift and brutal assault. Mohammadi recalls the immediate nature of the violence, stating, “The first punch of the fight was to me, and that was to my nose.” He further noted that he suffered a blow to his temple, adding, “It automatically started bleeding.”
As the fight unfolded on a walkway adjacent to the restaurant windows, the attackers allegedly escalated the violence. Ali Abdullah recalled that one of the individuals produced a weapon from a fanny pack. “One of them pulled out a baton, he had like a fanny pack. They pulled out a baton and tried to hit him [Mohammadi],” Abdullah said. He described a scene where the group attempted to gang up on Mohammadi, prompting Yousufi to intervene.
In the midst of the struggle, one individual produced a knife and stabbed Yousufi. The attack ended the life of the 23-year-old, who had stepped in to pull the attackers away from his cousin.

Dreams cut short
The loss is particularly poignant for a family that had only arrived in Canada from Afghanistan approximately one year ago. Yousufi was the youngest of four siblings and was pursuing a future in a technical field. His family and friends remember him as a happy, driven individual with a clear vision for his life.
The ambition to become an electrical engineer was a central part of Yousufi’s identity, a goal that his friend Ali Abdullah says was erased in an instant. “The dreams that he had have all been taken away. It was just one stupid mistake,” Abdullah said.
Mohammadi continues to struggle with the weight of his cousin’s sacrifice. “I was thinking to myself what kind of cousin I have. The person that tried to protect me. Because my cousin didn’t know them. They were trying to come after me and my cousin stepped up, he stepped up, he tried to protect me,” Mohammadi said.
The investigation and the call for justice
Durham Regional Police are treating the event as an isolated incident. In communications regarding the case, Const. Nicholas Gluckstein stated that there is currently no reason to believe there is a risk to public safety. Police believe that while some members of the two groups may have known each other, the victim and the accused did not have a prior relationship.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities focusing on the specific dynamics that led to the altercation. However, for the family and friends, the legal process is now the primary focus. Because the accused is 16 years old, the case falls under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, though the family is advocating for the suspect to be tried as an adult.
Mohammadi and Abdullah expressed that they are still feeling scared and believe that a more severe legal classification is necessary to ensure justice and prevent similar tragedies. “Everyone found jobs, they were happy, then this incident happened, which left the mom remarkably sad, the family sad, us sad, everyone sad,” Mohammadi said.
Police are continuing to seek evidence to complete the puzzle of that Saturday night. Anyone who was in the area between 7:30 p.m. And 9 p.m. And may have video footage or information is urged to contact investigators through the Durham Regional Police Service.
If you or a loved one are struggling with the aftermath of violence or grief, support is available through the Crisis Services Canada hotline.
The next steps in the legal process will involve preliminary hearings to determine the trajectory of the charges against the 16-year-old suspect. Further updates will be provided as the Durham Regional Police release more details regarding the evidence collected from the scene.
