The ecofeminist heritage of Víctor Català takes shape in the new exhibition that the Bòlit, the Contemporary Art Center of Girona, opens this Friday. More room for the dark. An ecocritical reading of Solitude, that can be seen until September 17 in Sant Nicolauhe reinterprets the best-known novel of Caterina Albert connecting it to the current ecological crisis and the contemporary thought of ecofeminism and posthumanities. In addition, it vindicates the plastic work of the staircase and draws the imagination of the Gothic genre linked to folklore and the wildest nature.

Artists such as Alba G. Corral, the writer and veterinarian Pilar Codony or the musician Carles Viarnés participate in the show, another branch of a transversal project of research and creation by Elvira Prado-Fabregat around the imagination of Loneliness. It includes an electronic and roots music show, a record and soon, also an essay that will collect the theoretical reflections and creative processes.

Co-produced by Bòlit, the Rural Life Museum and the Escala Museum, the project reviews the novel from the point of view of the cultural construction of natureestablishing a dialogue between the mythical, literary and visual universe of Víctor Català and contemporary artists from various disciplines.

In addition, however, the exhibition also focuses on the Gothic imagination linked to folklore and the idea of ​​the sublime – the wildest nature -, from which the author questions the “old ideas” that entangle the subalternities of women and nature.

The distance that separates (or not) humans from animals is the basis of the audiovisual piece by the filmmaker Alba Lombardía and the writer and Banyolina veterinarian Pilar Codony; while through an installation of two videos recorded with a mobile phone, the filmmaker Maddi Barber reformulates the climb up the mountain that Mila, the protagonist of Loneliness and the author’s reflections at the end of the novel accompanying a forest ranger in her ascent to a rock to find an insect and filming different encounters with insects.

Albert, plastic artist

The plastic work of Víctor Català it is also the starting point for two of the pieces exhibited in the chapel of Sant Nicolau. On the one hand, the proposal of the artist Mireia Coromina created from light artifacts that evoke the writer’s dark cycle to create a game of shadows that recalls the images of optical, photographic and pre-cinematic devices of the 19th century. On the other hand, Alba G Corral recodes Albert’s plastic works and Solitud’s visual imagination to make them emerge in digital language.

The last proposal, by Carles Viarnés, is the sound installation TransMuta work that starts from songs collected in the Càntut songbook related to the content of the novel and connects with the sound universe of the musical show Més lloc para la fosca, which could be seen at the Teatre Municipal last week past
