For “Zotorious,” the first 450 attendees received exclusive merchandise, including a tote bag designed specifically for the event. The high demand for the event speaks to the careful planning of the ASUCI Speakers Commission, led by third-year psychological science and education double major Sophia Nguyen, who oversees a team of six interns.
A Nostalgic Return for a Generation
Nguyen explained the decision to invite Justice, stating, “Growing up watching Nickelodeon, you already know [Victoria’s] name, she’s such an iconic character and just an iconic person really.” The sentiment resonated with students like Kayli Iwamoto, a fourth-year East Asian cultures major who attended the event dressed as Officer Padesco from a memorable “Victorious” episode. “Victoria has been such a big part of my childhood growing up, and I’ve really loved Victoria Justice’s work all through Nickelodeon,” Iwamoto said. “So when I heard she was coming to UCI for ZotTalks, I feel like I seriously couldn’t miss this opportunity.”
Justice was greeted with enthusiastic chants as she entered the Pacific Ballrooms, setting a lively tone for the conversation. The discussion covered her experiences on “Victorious,” the challenges and rewards of launching a music career – with releases including “Treat Myself” (2020), “Stay” (2021), and “Love Zombie” (2025) – and her other recent projects. Beyond reminiscing about her past roles, Justice offered insights into the realities of working in the entertainment industry.
The Importance of Hard Work and Authenticity
During the on-stage conversation, Justice emphasized the importance of professionalism and dedication. “There’s a lot of people’s jobs who are sitting there waiting for you and counting on you to do your job and to do it well,” she told the audience. “So yeah, I consider [acting] just taught me that no matter what is going on: work hard, show up, do your best, be kind to everyone, endeavor to make everyone feel included.”

In a playful nod to UCI’s traditions, Justice was also taught how to “Zot” – a gesture unique to the university involving the middle and ring fingers extended with the thumb – and joined the audience in performing the iconic hand sign.

Nguyen expressed her hope that students appreciated the opportunity to meet someone they had previously only seen on television. “I feel like that’s amazing to me, to be able to go to an event and be behind the scenes to events where people are seeing someone that they watched growing up,” she said. The next ZotTalks event is scheduled to grab place in the spring, continuing the series’ mission of bringing inspiring speakers to the UCI campus.
