The Russian Ministry of Defense published a video on Wednesday May 24 showing a Russian ship firing on a small boat which disappeared in an impressive explosion. These images quickly went around the world on the web. According to Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian ministry, the downed device is a Ukrainian naval drone which was trying to attack a reconnaissance vessel. “Today at 5:30 a.m. the Ukrainian Armed Forces unsuccessfully attempted to attack the Black Sea Fleet ship Ivan Khurs with three unmanned speedboats,” he said on Telegram. Russia claims to have destroyed all the devices responsible for the attack. “The ship Ivan Khurs of the Black Sea Fleet continues to fulfill its tasks,” assures Igor Konashenkov.

A version undermined by Ukraine. The next day, the country’s defense ministry shared on the networks images captured by one of their kamikaze drone during the clash. We can see the craft avoiding Russian fire and reaching the sides of the boat. The video stops at the moment of impact. “When the Russian reconnaissance ship “Ivan Khurs” encounters a Ukrainian drone. Indeed, a perfect match! the ministry tweeted ironically.

For the moment, no information has been given regarding the condition of the ship and the potential damage caused by the attack.

Last November, the Ukrainian government launched a campaign to fund “The world’s first naval drone fleet”. Objective: to provide defense in the Black Sea and prevent the Russian fleet from reaching Ukrainian soil. The machines also make it possible to protect the traffic corridors of grain ships.

Already used at least twice in Ukraine, this method has proven itself: two Russian ships were damaged in Crimea on October 29 and an oil depot attacked near Novorossiysk, on the Black Sea coast on November 18.
