When Pepê closed the account of the game in the 75th minute, the Brazilian winger was in tears on the bench. Sérgio Conceição went to comfort him and, in the quick interview area at the end of the game, he analyzed his pupil’s moment of frustration.
“That’s good. He’s feeling the game. I felt like I could have done a little more. We’re in this fight together. When we lose, we all lose. It wasn’t just Galeno who missed those opportunities. We all went. It’s with this spirit that we have to continue and mitigate what was a championship that was not so successful and with the victory of the Portuguese Cup”, said the FC Porto coach.
When asked if he felt a bit like Galeno’s father, regarding some of his statements when Francisco Conceição was called up to Portugal’s A Team, Conceição replied: “I want to be, some people maybe don’t feel like sons”, he said. At the time, the FC Porto coach said that he felt like a father to all the players.
Regarding the result, Sérgio Conceição regretted yet another false start, with Vitória making it 1-0 before the end of the first minute of the game.
“I think it was more of the same as what has happened in the last few games, the first time the opponent goes to goal they score. We have to approach the shot in a different way. We have to play duels in a different way. The game was prepared, Álvaro talks a lot about the spaces to explore, and today we explored these spaces well. Basically, we were always building up, playing behind the midfielders. It was important when we attracted the opponents, in the movements between the central defenders, and everything. that was prepared. We had more opportunities, it could have ended differently, but based on what Vitória did, I believe it was a fair result”, he began by saying.
“It’s a victory that doesn’t give anything. We don’t celebrate victories, we celebrate titles, so we’re satisfied. In our lives, we have to be used to negative situations that aren’t expected. I think the players were very mature. We continued within what was our strategy, today was a very good game from our fans, even from our rivals, who were always present. We only won one game”, he added.
With the victory, FC Porto will be in the Cup final for the fifth time, in Sérgio Conceição’s six years.
“In six years, five finals and three Portuguese Cups. At this moment, I believe I still owe one to FC Porto because I lost it. Do you have a score to settle with Sporting? It doesn’t depend on the opponent, it depends on us. Sporting is a finalist everywhere the credit he had for the difficult games that they also had until the end”, he added.
FC Porto advanced today to the final of the Portuguese Cup in football, by beating Vitória de Guimarães, 3-1, in the second leg of the ‘semi-finals’, going on to defend the trophy won in the last two editions against Sporting.
At Estádio do Dragão, in Porto, the Porto fans, who had a 1-0 lead from the first leg, started to lose, with Afonso Freitas scoring exactly one minute into the game, but turned the score around, with goals from Taremi (26), from a penalty, Francisco Conceição (45+5) and Pepê (75).
In the Portuguese Cup final, scheduled for May 26th, FC Porto, which has 19 trophies in the competition, will face Sporting, who beat Benfica in the other semi-final.
