The study identified a strong link between immersive tendencies – the ability to become deeply absorbed in a game – and the use of gaming for emotional regulation. Players who sought out games for their stories, social interaction, or as a form of escapism reported increased positive feelings after playing. However, the most significant reduction in negative feelings was observed among those who played for a sense of autonomy and the ability to explore within the game world.

Cahill explains that video games fall into a category called “ergodic literature,” meaning they require effort and engagement to progress, unlike passive forms of entertainment like watching television. This inherent challenge can be surprisingly beneficial. “People will often describe using their in-game experience as a metaphor for their [real-world] experiences,” Cahill says. “For example, defeating a challenge in-game might require several attempts and different strategies before a victory. Not only is that victory emotionally satisfying, but it also creates a sense of empowerment and competence gamers can carry into real life.”

Building Resilience Through Virtual Challenges

The concept of translating in-game experiences to real-world resilience is a key takeaway from the research. Cahill illustrates this with an example: “They might say, ‘This boss defeated me five times in a row, but the sixth time I got him.’ That’s a lesson you can internalize: maybe you failed five job interviews, but the sixth one might travel well.” This ability to persevere through setbacks, honed in a virtual environment, can foster a more resilient mindset in everyday life.

Cahill’s interest in the psychological effects of gaming began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he observed a surge in players turning to calming games like Animal Crossing for stress relief. However, he suspected that the benefits of gaming extended beyond simple distraction. He conducted the latest study with James Cummings, an associate professor of emerging media studies at Boston University, and Erin Wertz, a researcher at the University of Warsaw in Poland.

Beyond Entertainment: A Nuanced Approach

The study underscores the importance of avoiding generalizations about video games. The emotional impact of gaming varies greatly depending on the individual, the game itself, and the player’s motivations. A simulation game like FarmVille will offer a vastly different experience than a fast-paced shooter like Call of Duty or a complex role-playing game like The Witcher. Even within a single game, like the popular Fortnite, players can find enjoyment in both action-packed combat and social interaction.

“I think that the big takeaway is to really try and push back on treating video games as a monolith in terms of their psychological effects,” Cahill says. “There are going to be some play experiences that are incredibly emotionally complex, rewarding, and stimulating, and there are others that are actually going to be detrimental [to someone’s well-being].”

Researchers, policymakers, and parents should consider these nuances when evaluating the role of video games in mental health. Instead of asking simply “Does gaming have a positive or negative effect?” the focus should be on understanding *how* people are playing and *why*.
