“I was sleeping when a friend called me to say ‘get up there’s a fire!’. We quickly got out, the windows were exploding, we ran under the projectiles. I’m traumatized, I don’t even know where I’m going to sleep tonight, ”says still in shock Dady, a teenager who lives on the 8th floor of the burnt tower in the Maurice Thorez district, in L’Île-Saint-Denis. The fire that broke out this Saturday morning, on the 9th floor of his building, killed 3 people.
According to the Bobigny prosecutor’s office, it is a mother and her 13-year-old son. And of a young woman who fell from the building during its evacuation by the firefighters. A major rescue and fire-fighting system was deployed, mobilizing nearly 200 firefighters supported by sixty vehicles. In the early afternoon, the emergency services managed to bring the fire under control.
The town hall of the town quickly opened a crisis unit and set up a reception center for evacuees, at the Alice-Milliat gymnasium, a few meters from the scene of the tragedy. “We had food, water, we were able to shower, says a resident of the 5th floor. Solidarity was organized very quickly, neighbors brought us tea and coffee”. An investigation for “research of the causes of death” was opened and entrusted to the department’s judicial police service. The origins of the fire are still unknown.
