Two officers sustained serious injuries, and three others were hurt when two police vehicles collided while responding to an emergency call in Vienna early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Vordere Zollamtsstrasse and Marxergasse,prompting a significant emergency response.
Responding to a Public Safety Concern
The two police cars were en route to address a situation involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.According to a police spokeswoman, the individual was reportedly walking on Rotenturmstrasse in the city center with a piece of glass. The exact circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.
“How exactly the accident occurred still needs to be investigated,” a senior official stated.
Rescue Operation and Injuries
The impact left the 33-year-old driver and his 30-year-old colleague trapped inside one of the vehicles. The professional fire brigade swiftly arrived on the scene and successfully extricated the officers, handing them over to paramedics for immediate medical attention. Both officers were transported to a local hospital with fractures.
The driver of the second police car, age 31, and his two colleagues, both 21 years old, also sustained injuries and received emergency medical care. Following a hospital stay, the three younger officers were released and are now recovering at home.
