Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, wields an influence in European politics far exceeding the population he represents. He constantly clashes with decisions made in Brussels and stands out as the sole EU leader openly supportive of Russia.
Orbán’s disapproval of Joe Biden‘s 2020 victory over Donald Trump was anything but muted. In fact, he was one of Trump’s most ardent allies in the European Union. What would a Trump victory this week mean for Orbán’s role in Europe?
Both Orbán and Trump subscribe to a conservative ideology. Their leadership styles also share striking similarities, with both positioning themselves as powerful figures impervious to criticism. Recently, while Georgia’s election results remain disputed, Orbán congratulated Georgia’s pro-Russian Prime Minister. This occurred while Hungary held the EU presidency, creating significant controversy.
“Orbán’s stance sows confusion,” says Zsuzsanna Szelenyi, a political analyst at the CEO Democracy Institute in Budapest. “He’s part of the EU but endorses pro-Russian forces in Georgia. This is highly controversial.”
“His message is clear: I do what I want. Don’t try to control me. I’m a strong leader,” adds Frank Furedi, director of the conservative think tank MCC Brussel.
Orbán also argues that decisions on election validity should be made by him, not the EU. He doesn’t see the EU as acknowledging legitimate conservative elections, suggesting a double standard.
Orbán recently ramped up his attacks against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the EU by labeling them a conspiracy against Hungary and “actively trying” to replace the Hungarian government with a puppet regime.
Szelenyi believes Orbán’s actions isolate him further. “His radicalization continues, and there’s no turning back. European partners need to adjust their strategies.”
Beyond the sharp rhetoric lies Orbán’s electoral strategy: publicly positioning himself as strong international voice. Internal polls show the opposition led by popular politician Peter Magyar gaining ground on Orbán’s party.
Orbán is sure to celebrate a Trump victory, knowing it strengthens his regional ambitions. A Trump victory would empower Orbán.
“He’s become more extreme in his attacks, but it’s also a display of strength.
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Political Expert on Viktor Orbán’s Influence in Europe
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome to our interview segment! Today, we have Dr. Amelia Jurák, a renowned political analyst specializing in European politics. Dr. Jurák, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Amelia Jurák (AJ): Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
TNE: Let’s dive right in. Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s Prime Minister, seems to be a pivotal figure in EU politics, especially when it comes to his interactions with both Brussels and Moscow. What do you think accounts for his disproportionate influence compared to Hungary’s size?
AJ: Orbán has certainly carved out a niche for himself within the EU. His assertive rhetoric and willingness to confront EU norms allow him to position Hungary as a counterweight, appealing to other member states’ discontents with Brussels. His skillful use of populism underscores his ability to galvanize support, which, combined with Hungary’s strategic location, amplifies his voice on the European stage.
TNE: Speaking of being audacious, Orbán has been notably vocal about his approval of Russia. What does this stance signify in the current geopolitical landscape?
AJ: Orbán’s Russia-friendly stance is quite provocative, especially when EU sanctions against Russia remain in place due to its actions in Ukraine. It signals a desire for an alternative power dynamic—tapping into historical ties with Russia and presenting himself as a nationalist leader unafraid to challenge the prevailing consensus in Europe.
TNE: Orbán’s relationship with Donald Trump is another intriguing aspect. What do you think a Trump victory in the recent elections would mean for Orbán’s role in Europe?
AJ: If Trump were to win again, it could embolden Orbán. Both are seen as champions of a conservative ideology, and a Trump presidency could reinforce Orbán’s narrative of a united front against what they perceive as undue influence from liberal elites. This alliance could reshape both European and transatlantic policies, moving them further to the right.
TNE: That raises the questions of shared governance and ideological alignment. Orbán has managed to maintain his influence despite criticism. How does he navigate the challenges to his governance?
AJ: Orbán has built a political narrative around being a protector of national sovereignty and cultural identity. He often frames criticism from Brussels as an infringement on Hungary’s self-determination. This resonates deeply with his base, allowing him to portray dissent against his policies as an attack on national pride, which he uses to rally support.
TNE: Let’s talk about the implications for the EU as a whole. With leaders like Orbán who openly challenge EU directives, what does this mean for the European Union’s unity and future?
AJ: It poses significant challenges. If more countries adopt a hardline stance inspired by Orbán, we could see an erosion of EU cohesion. The increasing stratification between Eastern and Western Europe may hinder consensus on critical issues, impacting everything from immigration to economic policy. The EU may have to reconsider its strategies to address dissenting voices without fracturing the union further.
TNE: So, in your view, it seems Orbán’s brand of politics might inspire a more populist Europe?
AJ: Precisely. Orbán’s unique blend of nationalism and populism resonates with many citizens across Europe who feel disenfranchised. If left unchecked, this populist wave could lead to the rise of similar leaders, challenging the liberal democratic foundations of the EU.
TNE: Thank you, Dr. Jurák, for your insights. It’s clear that Orbán’s influence extends beyond Hungary, shaping the broader political landscape in Europe. We appreciate your expertise and look forward to your continued commentary on these developments.
AJ: Thank you for having me. It’s been a great discussion!
