The initiative, which can also be seen at the Cartuixa d’Escaladei, the Prat de la Riba house-museum and the castle-monastery of Escornalbou, recreates in the refectory of the canonry a table set for the twelve canons and the Abbot who made up the community in the 16th century thanks to the research done by professionals in history, art history, design or scenography to guarantee its rigor.

The monuments chosen correspond to four different chronologies and different types of heritage because the proposal of the Department of Culture vol bring the public closer to the uses and customs linked to Christmas meals and socialization throughout history. At the same time, we want to spread Catalan gastronomic culture as an intangible heritage and in relation to the material heritage represented by the monuments. With this historical recreation we want to recover the human space that is configured around a table, in addition to showing the various ways of celebrating the Christmas holidays according to the time and the place where it is celebrated. The four heritage spaces chosen range from the sobriety of the Cartuixa d’Escaladei, to the ostentation of the Castle of Escornalbou, passing through the familiarity of the Prat de la Riba House-Museum and the collection of the Canònica de Vilabertran. Two religious examples in the middle of the Middle Ages, with different characteristics according to the order, and two civilian examples from the beginning of the 20th century, one from the well-to-do bourgeoisie and the other of a rural character.

The table stopped recreates the precise moment of the Christmas lunch in specific interiors with the social roles of each member of the family or of the community represented. The link between family and home is a social construction that shows a specific era and a mentality and tastes of the individuals who inhabit it. The space, objects and recipes respond to different ways of thinking and doing, at different historical moments.

A The family you choose Christmas 1928 is represented when he invites some friends to this meal dressed as a party.

Part of the research has also focused on the recovery of recipes, menus and dishes that were served at Christmas meals in the participating monuments. Chef Sergi de Meià has been able to recreate four recipes and they are available on Patrimoni Gencat’s Youtube channel so that anyone who wants to can prepare them at home. In particular, they have replicated the roast turkey that Eduard Toda liked so much in Escornalbou, the traditional escudella and carn d’olla that was served at the house of President Enric Prat de la Riba, the goat on the pole of the canons of Vilabertran and the rice bowl of the Carthusian fathers of Escaladei.

Standing tables can be enjoyed at each of the monuments, included in the price of the entrance to each monument. In addition, two thematic guided tours have been organized in each of the participating monuments, on Saturdays 23 and 30 December, at 12 noon and for which advance booking is required.
