Vincent Kompany Welcomes Goalkeeper Debate Between Neuer and Urbig

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has welcomed the ongoing public scrutiny surrounding club captain Manuel Neuer and young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, describing the intense debate as beneficial for the squad as management navigates a carefully planned generational transition.

The murmurs surrounding Bayern Munich’s goal crease reached a fever pitch following matchday five of the Bundesliga. Playing their Bavarian derby away at Augsburg, Bayern dropped points in a 2-2 draw after trailing for the first 55 minutes. The deadlock followed an opening goal conceded just eight seconds into the match, stemming from a misplay by Manuel Neuer.

That early error quickly reignited a broader conversation across German football over whether the veteran keeper has passed his peak. Pundits on television, including former goalkeepers Jens Lehmann and Oliver Kahn, questioned whether Urbig is ready to fill such demanding shoes and suggested Neuer might have missed his ideal moment to step away from the game, pointing to the physical demands placed on a body at 36, 37, and 38 years old.

Vincent Kompany Defends the Goalkeeping Plan

Facing reporters ahead of a fixture against RB Leipzig, Kompany brushed off the external talk show commentary while offering an unexpected perspective on the pressure surrounding his two netminders.

I cannot always assess what’s being said on talk shows… We always have a plan [for his development] and try to stick to it. It’s great for us that Jonas is part of the conversation. We’ve developed this situation step by step since he arrived from Köln.

The Belgian manager noted that the club anticipated these exact conversations when Urbig arrived from Köln in January 2025 for a reported seven million euros. At the time, the move raised eyebrows across the league because the then-21-year-old was not even a regular starter for his former club.

Vincent Kompany stated that the club had discussed the situation when Urbig arrived from Cologne in January two years ago, adding that they let the situation develop step by step and knew a year in advance that this discussion would come, which he described as a good thing.

Kompany also emphasized that the veteran incumbent deserves full credit for his role in mentoring the younger squad member and anchoring the team’s defense.

Manuel is a huge part of this story. It doesn’t work without Manu, without his presence, leadership and performances during this period.

Current Squad Standing and Injury Updates

Despite the regular rotation, club leadership maintains that the overarching pecking order remains unchanged. Max Eberl reiterated that Neuer remains Munich’s number one. Even so, Urbig is set to receive more playing time this season.

That recent European appearance came about after Neuer experienced foot discomfort that kept him off the training pitch.

Vincent Kompany explained that Manu was not training because he was feeling some discomfort in his foot, noting that first he needed to feel better and train when he could, then that phase would be over again.

First of all, I have to say that our sporting management did an excellent job. We signed one of the best young goalkeepers around in Jonas Urbig. He’s getting game time, he has a great harmony with Manuel Neuer. Jonas has already played his first games for Germany. I’m convinced he’ll become #1 for Bayern and Germany.

Herbert Hainer, Bayern Munich president

As discussions continue between management and both goalkeepers, the club is speaking to both players to manage the transition. In the domestic table, Bayern currently sit second behind Dortmund, who hold 13 points.
