MADRID —

Jonas Vingegaard, the reigning two-time Tour de France champion, had to be taken by ambulance to a hospital after suffering a spectacular fall in the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday.

The Danish rider of the Visma team was left motionless while receiving treatment from doctors on the side of the road, after the massive fall that occurred less than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the finish line of the fourth stage. He was loaded into an ambulance with an oxygen mask and neck brace.

An hour after the accident, Visma reported in a statement that “Jonas is conscious and will now be examined at the hospital.”
