The Italian wine industry reaffirmed its commitment to the united States, a key market representing 38% of total import wine consumption, at the second edition of Vinitaly.usa in Chicago, October 5-6. The event, held at Navy Pier, drew over 250 Italian wine companies, consortia, and regional collectives, facilitating business-to-business engagements with more than 1,500 buyers.
A Vital Market for Italian Exports
“The great participation of Italian companies in Vinitaly.usa in Chicago tells us that the US market is not replaceable and that it is indeed worth investing,” stated a senior official during the event’s inauguration. “The strong presence of American and buyer operators demonstrates that Italian wine continues to be a sought-after product.” This sentiment underscores the strategic importance of the US to Italian wine producers, particularly as global trade dynamics shift.
The Italian government echoed this support, with the Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, announcing a commitment to achieving 700 billion euros in exports by the end of the current legislature. This goal is being pursued through a “growth diplomacy strategy” that prioritizes both established and emerging markets, with the US remaining a critical focus. To address concerns surrounding tariffs, the Minister of Agriculture,Francesco Lollobrigida, announced the creation of a dedicated “Task Force Dazi” within the Ministry to support companies navigating trade challenges.
Expanding Reach and Targeting New Consumers
Vinitaly.usa, organized by Veronafiere-Vinitaly in collaboration with the Italian trade Agency (Ita), Italian Fairs, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest-Chicago, is positioned as a direct response to the challenges posed by tariffs and market uncertainty. Federico Bricolo, President of Veronafiere, emphasized that the event strengthens Italy’s presence in a “strategic and far from saturated market” with important growth potential.
Currently, 75% of US consumers of Italian wine are concentrated in fifteen states, lead by California, New York, Florida, Texas, and illinois. However, the industry is actively seeking to broaden its consumer base. Analysis from the UIV-vinitaly Observatory and IWSR reveals a shift in the demographic profile of the future Italian wine consumer. While Caucasian consumers aged between Boomer and Gen X currently dominate (75% and 62% respectively), the next generation of wine enthusiasts is expected to be male, Gen Z or Millennial, and of Latin American or African descent, residing in states like Texas, Illinois, California, South Carolina, and Georgia.
. A visual portrayal of this demographic shift would further illustrate the evolving landscape of the US wine market.

Italian companies generate over 2.2 billion dollars in annual sales overseas, while US commercial partners benefit from a value exceeding 10 billion dollars.
