Agatharied Hospital Achieves DKG Certification, Strengthening Regional Cancer Care

The Agatharied Hospital has been recognized as a leading center for visceral oncology, receiving dual certification from the German Cancer Society (DKG) for both pancreatic and colon cancer care. This achievement underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive, localized cancer treatment and solidifies its position amidst ongoing healthcare reforms.

Agatharied – For individuals facing a cancer diagnosis, treatment often extends over years, making accessible and reliable care crucial. The district hospital in Agatharied has prioritized this need, and its recent certifications are a testament to that dedication.

A Dual Certification Signals Commitment to Excellence

The Agatharied Hospital now proudly holds DKG-certified status as a visceral oncology center, a distinction earned through a rigorous process. This includes not only the new pancreatic cancer center recognition but also the recertification of its long-established colon cancer center. “The Agatharied Hospital can now call itself a DKG-certified visceral oncology center – significant proof of the high quality and performance of our oncological care,” hospital officials stated.

The certification process was extensive, involving an 80-page application, a two-day audit by DKG experts, thorough inspections, interviews with key partners, and a detailed review of patient records. This demonstrates a commitment to meeting the highest standards of care.

Collaborative Network Enhances Patient Outcomes

Recognizing that comprehensive cancer care requires a broad range of expertise, the hospital has cultivated a robust network of healthcare partners. Representatives from the medical profession, nursing staff, hospital administration, and local government officials highlighted the importance of this collaborative approach during a recent press conference.

Hospital board member Benjamin Barthold explained, “The treatment of cancer patients is an interdisciplinary story. It is important that all partners work well together.” This network includes close cooperation with the Ebersberg Munich East District Hospital and the Asklepios City Clinic Bad Tölz, particularly in the area of pancreatic surgery.

Navigating Hospital Reform with a Strong Foundation

The timing of this certification is particularly significant as Germany prepares for upcoming hospital reforms. The Agatharied Hospital’s specialization and collaborative structure position it favorably for the future, where such attributes will be increasingly valued. District Administrator Olaf von Löwis emphasized his unwavering support for the hospital, stating he was not worried about “our hospital” because the district would “never abandon it.” He also voiced support for legal challenges to potential federal austerity measures that could impact hospital funding, noting that approximately 1.8 billion euros could be at risk.

Interdisciplinary Approach at the Core of Care

A key component of the hospital’s success is its weekly tumor conference, where a diverse team of specialists convenes to discuss individual patient cases. According to Jan D’Haese, head of general, visceral, vascular and endocrine surgery, “There is no treatment without it first being discussed in an interdisciplinary manner.”

This collaborative approach allows the hospital to leverage its strengths while acknowledging its limitations, ensuring patients receive the most appropriate and effective care. As Barthold noted, the goal is to provide a convenient first point of contact for patients, recognizing that “cancer is common” and requires accessible care. Senior physician in hematology and oncology, Clemens Gießen-Jung, added, “I can’t do everything on an outpatient basis. And if it can’t be done on an outpatient basis, then at least the patients shouldn’t have to travel far.”

The Agatharied Hospital’s commitment to regional cancer care, coupled with its new DKG certifications, ensures that patients in the area have access to high-quality, comprehensive treatment close to home.
