The measure was awaited by many families after the restrictions introduced during the Covid-19 crisis. MPs adopted on Tuesday the “aging well” law, which notably guarantees the right to visit relatives for people residing in nursing homes or in palliative care, even in the event of a health crisis.

Elected officials also voted to allow nursing home residents to live with their pet. However, this advantage will have limits: “We are opening this possibility but under conditions set by decree, such as on the size of the animals,” explained the rapporteur to the Assembly Annie Vidal, also assuring that the resident would have to “ or capable of handling the animal.”

The text provides for the creation of a departmental autonomy service, a “one-stop shop to decompartmentalize” policies in favor of the elderly and people with disabilities, and establishes a departmental body for reporting cases of mistreatment.

Concerning accommodation in nursing homes, establishments authorized for social assistance “will benefit from controlled flexibility in setting their prices”, écrit the Senate. Finally, the law creates a professional card to facilitate recognition of the work of home workers.

The text adopted Tuesday by the Assembly, a compromise found in committee between deputies and senators, aroused criticism from the opposition.

During the debates on Tuesday, PS deputy Jérôme Guedj denounced the government’s “contempt” for Parliament, and the lack of “continuity of speech” from the executive power. “It’s not dogs and cats that we need in nursing homes, it’s nurses,” he said without hiding his “anger”.
