Iridium and Vodafone IoT Partner to Extend Global Connectivity with Satellite-Based NB-IoT

A new collaboration aims to bring narrowband IoT connectivity to the most remote locations on Earth, leveraging satellite technology to overcome conventional coverage limitations.
Iridium Communications and Vodafone IoT have announced a strategic partnership to integrate Iridium’s NTN Direct service,substantially expanding the reach of the operator’s Internet of Things (IoT) division. This collaboration promises ubiquitous connectivity for customers and their assets,even in areas beyond the scope of terrestrial networks.
Bridging the Connectivity gap with Satellite Technology
The partnership centers around extending coverage for customers utilizing narrowband (NB)-IoT connectivity. Currently, connecting devices in remote locations presents a significant challenge. This new venture will enable connectivity for devices in areas previously unreachable, opening up possibilities for a wider range of IoT applications. Vodafone IoT will gain access to Iridium NTN Direct, a service built on 3GPP standards that provides both NB-IoT and direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity.
Vodafone IoT already boasts a substantial network, with over 215 million devices connected across more than 760 networks in over 180 countries. This existing infrastructure, combined with iridium’s satellite capabilities, will create a powerful synergy for global IoT solutions.
Commercial Launch and Key Applications
The integrated service is slated for commercial launch in 2026. It will utilize the Iridium network to provide data messaging, tracking, and real-time monitoring for IoT, automotive, and industrial devices. Industries poised to benefit most include those with operations in extremely remote locations, such as windfarms, oil pipelines, shipping, and emergency services.
Iridium’s existing positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services are already utilized in critical infrastructure, including synchronizing 5G networks and safeguarding global trade. The company’s low earth orbit satellites ensure uninterrupted performance for these vital systems.
Reliability and Scalability Through Proven Infrastructure
Iridium operates on globally coordinated L-band spectrum with a well-established infrastructure, providing reliable and low-power connectivity at scale. The company’s history of providing safety of life services – which demand high reliability – positions its constellation as ideal for both D2D and NB-IoT applications. This is particularly crucial in remote and mobile environments where consistent performance is paramount.

Expanding IoT Capabilities with Oracle Integration
Vodafone’s global IoT functionality is also available on oracle’s Enterprise Communications Platform (ECP) industry applications, further empowering industries to orchestrate, connect, and manage IoT devices on a global scale.
Following triumphant integration and testing, Iridium and Vodafone IoT plan to launch a full commercial service, promising a new era of global connectivity for iot solutions.
