Volcano Volcano erupts on Galapagos

by time news

On the largest island of the Galapagos archipelago, Isabela, a volcanic eruption began. The highest volcano in the archipelago, Wolfe (also known as Wolff – named after German geologist Theodore Wolff, Galapagos archipelago in the 19th century), began erupting after more than five years of hibernation, according to Galapagos National Park, the archipelago’s tallest volcano.

The last time Wolfe reminded of himself was in 2015, but in general it is considered weakly active: in 900 years from the moment of its formation, it has had about 20 eruptions. The height of the volcano is 1707 meters, the depth of the caldera is up to 700 meters.

Isabela Island is known for its unique pink iguanas, which were recognized as a separate species in 2009. The population numbers about half a thousand individuals.
