WA Storms: Flash Floods & Damaging Winds Forecasted

by ethan.brook News Editor

Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across parts of Western Australia, bringing the threat of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding to the southern interior. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued an alert at 5:22 PM local time, warning residents to prepare for hazardous conditions. Simultaneously, a separate warning is in place for the Pilbara region, where damaging winds are expected.

The immediate concern centers on a low-pressure system near Carnegie, which is triggering thunderstorms along its eastern flank. According to the BOM, “A very moist airmass is in place in the South Interior,” creating conditions ripe for heavy downpours. Residents in affected areas are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Southern Interior Braces for Flash Flooding

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that the thunderstorms in the southern interior are capable of producing “heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding” over the next several hours. Residents are advised to stay informed and avoid travel if possible. The alert specifically mentions the area near Carnegie as being particularly vulnerable.

Flash flooding can occur rapidly, even in areas not typically prone to flooding. It’s crucial to avoid driving through flooded roads and to seek higher ground if water levels start to rise. The BOM provides detailed information on understanding and preparing for flash floods on their website: https://www.bom.gov.au/environment/floods/.

Damaging Winds Threaten Pilbara Region

Further north, the Pilbara region is facing a different, but equally dangerous, threat: damaging winds. The BOM issued a separate severe thunderstorm warning at 4:56 PM, stating that “damaging wind gusts” are occurring in central parts of the Pilbara. Marble Bar is specifically identified as a location that may be affected.

Damaging winds can cause power outages, fallen trees, and structural damage. Residents in the Pilbara are advised to secure outdoor furniture, stay indoors, and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency WA recommends preparing an emergency kit and reviewing your family’s safety plan. More information and updates can be found on the Emergency WA website: https://www.emergencywa.com.au/.

Preparing for Severe Weather

Emergency WA advises residents in both affected regions to take the following precautions:

  • Secure outdoor furniture and belongings.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies, including food, water, and a first-aid kit.
  • Review your family’s emergency plan.
  • Stay informed by monitoring the BOM website and local news reports.
  • Avoid driving through flooded roads or areas with strong winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official sources for the latest information on these severe weather events. The next update from the BOM is expected Saturday evening, February 21st.
