A year after a first analogy between the war led by Russia and that launched by Nazi Germany during the Second World War, Volodymyr Zelensky once again took advantage of the commemorations of this Monday, May 8, 2023 to compare “the evil and “the darkness brought back to the European continent” by Vladimir Putin to that of Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

“All the old evil that modern Russia is bringing back will be defeated the same way Nazism was defeated,” the Ukrainian president said in an address posted on his social media shortly after another large-scale Russian attack on Kiev, in the capital. during which more than thirty suicide drones were shot down over the capital.

“The same goal: enslavement or destruction”

“Just as we destroyed evil together then, we destroy similar evil together now,” he continued. And to add: “This evil, although different today, has the same goal: enslavement or destruction”.

” We will vanquish ! Volodymyr Zelensky promised again in this recorded speech in front of an imposing World War II memorial complex overlooking the Dnieper River in kyiv.

This speech also comes on the eve of “Victory Day” in Russia and a large military parade in Moscow supposed to exalt the Russian patriotic feeling, in which Vladimir Putin will participate. The Russians traditionally retain the date of May 9, 1945 as the day of victory over Nazi Germany, 24 hours after that retained by the West.

“We will never forget the contribution of the Ukrainian people to the victory over Nazism,” insisted Volodymyr Zelensky. “And we will not allow anyone to lie that victory in this war could have happened without the participation of another country or people,” he said.

The Ukrainian president again accused Moscow of having opposed “the ideals” of democracy “aggression and annexation, occupation and deportation, massacre and torture, the bombardment of cities and the burning of villages”. “We will not lose what we have won, we will recover everything that has been captured by the enemy”, he still assured in this ten-minute speech.

Ukraine says it is completing its preparations for a major offensive with the aim of reconquering the territories occupied by Russia in the east and south, in addition to the annexed Crimea. In recent days, drone attacks on the Ukrainian and Russian sides have intensified, a sign according to observers of the imminence of this assault on kyiv.
