warren Schaeffer to Lead Rockies Through Ambitious Rebuild

The Colorado Rockies have officially retained Warren Schaeffer as their manager, signaling a commitment to a long-term rebuild despite recent struggles. The proclamation, made Monday, comes with a “mult-year deal” for the 40-year-old Schaeffer, who took the helm as interim manager mid-season.

“we’re confident Warren is the right person to lead our club moving forward,” stated Paul DePodesta, the Rockies’ new president of baseball operations. “He has established a strong rapport with our players and staff, and we believe his leadership will be crucial as we navigate this process.” The contract remain undisclosed, the decision underscores the organization’s belief in Schaeffer’s ability to navigate a challenging period.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to continue leading this team,” Schaeffer said. “My focus remains on continuing to build a strong, unified culture based on accountability, hard work and trust. We have a group of guys who care deeply about competing the right way, and my goal is to keep strengthening those relationships while leading a team that our fans can embrace and be proud of.”

The 2023 season presented significant hurdles. Under Schaeffer’s leadership, the Rockies finished with a 36-86 record, contributing to an overall mark of 43-119. This marked the third consecutive 100-loss season for the club – a feat not achieved as the Houston Astros from 2011 to 2013.

Despite the challenging record, players voiced strong support for Schaeffer’s approach. Several Rockies players appreciated his communication skills and attention to detail, expressing hope for his return. Veteran left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland affirmed this sentiment on Monday, stating, “I’m very excited for ‘Schaeff’ and his family and our organization with him at the lead. We love playing for him and the type of mentality and passion he brings to the field every day.”

Catcher Hunter Goodman, the team’s 2025 All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, highlighted Schaeffer’s value to the team’s younger players. “I think it’s really good for the team, especially with all of our young guys,” Goodman said. “He’s a younger manager. He’s got a great relationship with all of our guys. His level of communication with me, throughout the season, was awesome. As far as a leadership role, he shows up every day with the drive to get better and I think that’s what we need.”

Schaeffer’s appointment is part of a broader organizational overhaul. In June, Walker Monfort was promoted to executive vice president, and earlier this month, DePodesta was named president of baseball operations, replacing Bill Schmidt, who stepped down on October 1. The Rockies are currently seeking a general manager to work under DePodesta’s direction.

Schaeffer’s journey with the Rockies began in 2013 as the hitting coach for short-Season Tri-City. He steadily progressed through the organization, managing the Asheville Tourists (2015-2017) and Double-A Hartford (2018-2019). A planned assignment to manage Triple-A Albuquerque in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he led the Isotopes in 2021 and 2022 before joining the major league coaching staff as third base and infield coach in 2023.

Interestingly, Schaeffer’s path to managing wasn’t a direct one. Born and raised in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, he was a standout high school baseball player, hitting .554 as a senior and earning the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s East Player of the Year award. Recruited by Harvard and Princeton, he chose Virginia Tech, where he played shortstop for four seasons. Drafted by Colorado in the 42nd round in 2004, Schaeffer spent seven years in the minor leagues, reaching Triple-A but ultimately falling short of his dream of playing in the majors. He finished his minor league career with a .214 batting average in 461 games.

This experience, tho, fueled his transition to coaching, demonstrating a deep-rooted passion for the game and a commitment to player growth. The Rockies are betting that Schaeffer’s journey – from aspiring player to respected coach – will be instrumental in building a winning culture in Colorado.
