Washington Huskies Face Nevada Battling Injury Woes, Seeking Holiday Classic Defense

Despite a 4-1 start to the season, the University of Washington men’s basketball team is grappling with a significant injury crisis, prompting head coach Danny Sprinkle to jokingly dub his campus “the sprained ankle capital of the world.” The Huskies will attempt to defend their Acrisure Holiday Classic title against the Nevada Wolf Pack (4-2) on Thursday in Palm Desert, California, potentially without several key players.

Injury Concerns Plague Huskies

Washington hasn’t played since a hard-fought 99-93 double-overtime victory against Southern on November 18, but the time off hasn’t alleviated the team’s health issues. Starting forwards Hannes Steinbach and Bryson Tucker were already sidelined for that contest, and backup center Lathan Sommerville, who contributed 10 points and six rebounds in previous games, suffered an injury during Saturday’s practice.

Adding to the team’s woes, forward Jacob Ognacevic, last season’s Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year while at Lipscomb, has yet to make his debut for the Huskies due to a foot injury. “We’re still a little banged up,” Sprinkle stated. “We’re going to have to get used to playing some funky lineups, and it might have to be five guards at times.”

Key Players Step Up Amidst Adversity

Despite the mounting injury list, the Huskies have shown resilience. In the win against Southern, transfers Wesley Yates III and Desmond Claude, both hailing from Southern California, led the scoring with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Franck Kepnang also made a significant impact, recording six points, 12 rebounds, and six blocked shots.

However, Washington returns only two players – Kepnang and guard Zoom Diallo – from the squad that won the Acrisure Invitational championship last season, defeating Santa Clara 76-69.

Nevada Looks to Rebound

The Nevada Wolf Pack enters the matchup with a 4-2 record, having initially won their first three games before suffering consecutive losses to Santa Clara and UC Davis. They rebounded with a 77-64 victory against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, fueled by a career-high 27 points from Corey Camper Jr., with Tayshawn Comer and Elijah Price adding 14 points apiece. Price also secured eight rebounds.

“I thought our guys did a great job defensively,” Nevada coach Steve Alford said. “They proved they can play on both ends and be proficient. Hopefully, that’s something we can build on.”

History Favors the Wolf Pack

The Wolf Pack holds a 3-0 advantage in the head-to-head series against the Huskies over the past four seasons, including a 63-53 victory last season in Reno, Nevada – Sprinkle’s first game leading the Washington program.

The Huskies will need to overcome their injury challenges and rewrite that history if they hope to successfully defend their Acrisure Holiday Classic title.
