Bengaluru: New facts related to the discovery of water on the moon have come to light. A recent study by Indian and international scientists has raised hopes that the Moon’s polar craters may contain much more subsurface water ice than previously thought. ISRO on Wednesday said that research published in ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing shows that the amount of ice a few meters below the surface is 5 to 8 times more than at the surface. This buried ice could prove vital to maintaining a long-term human presence on the Moon.
T Chakraborty of ISRO Space Applications Center (SAC) said, ‘Accurate information on the distribution and depth of this ice will prove important in selecting landing sites to detect and sample these lunar volatiles in the future. Analyzing data from seven instruments aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), the team found that the northern polar region has about twice as much ice as the southern poles. The ice is believed to have originated from gas released during ancient lunar volcanism.

The findings, drawn using radar data from India’s Chandrayaan-2 lunar orbiter, indicate that ice may be deposited in some polar craters. ISRO says the new study supports its future plans for in-situ investigation of lunar volatiles. Water is a valuable resource for human life. In such a situation, the presence of ice just below the surface of the Moon creates a new possibility. Scientists from all over the world have been searching for water on the Moon for years. Different types of information have also been coming out regarding this.
