INTERVIEW – Cathy Clerbaux, CNRS researcher at Latmos in Paris, identifies several factors that explain the current trend of the planet to warm up, particularly in the coming months.

LE FIGARO. – Why should the average temperature increase be greater in the coming months?

The underlying trend is of course linked to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Added to this is the drop in automobile pollution (linked to the deployment of electric vehicles in Europe, the United States and China), whose aerosols shield solar radiation.

These two phenomena contribute +1.2°C to the rise in future temperatures. Also, the solar cycle (about ten years old, editor’s note) approaches its maximum. In addition, the recurring climatic event El Niño (a surface temperature anomaly in the Pacific), which tends to warm the planet, is taking hold.
