They nicknamed themselves, not without humor, “the victims of Malville”, the Ploërmel district where they live. For four days and the passage of storm Ciaran, Fabrice Tanguy and his partner Emmanuelle have learned to live without electricity, like hundreds of other residents of this town in Morbihan. “Since Thursday, we have relied on family and friends for meals, showers and even for washing clothes,” explains Fabrice. We are invited here and there, we charge our cell phones on these occasions. We even had to transfer food from the freezer to relatives. Enedis agents from Auvergne are active in the town. But the problem is that we don’t know when the electricity will be restored and what next week will be like. »

The passage of a new storm called Domingos, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, with winds of 152 km/h in Gironde, did not help matters. According to the latest Enedis report, this Sunday evening, another 164,000 homes remained without electricity, 97,000 in Brittany, 50,000 homes in New Aquitaine and 17,000 in Normandy.

An Enedis technician died

On the Atlantic coast, many buildings suffered damage and emergency services received hundreds of calls for uprooted trees or broken branches. An Enedis technician died on Saturday in Pont-Aven (Finistère) during an intervention. According to the first elements of the investigation entrusted to the gendarmerie, the forty-year-old died while handling damaged cables. “He had come as reinforcements from Midi-Pyrénées. I send my condolences to his family, loved ones and all his colleagues affected by this tragedy. The energy sector is in mourning,” reacted on X (ex-Twitter) Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Energy Transition. This is the third death since the start of the severe weather. A time of contemplation was observed this Sunday when starting work.

Rail was also impacted by the Domingos storm with lines still closed in Brittany, Normandy, New Aquitaine, and numerous delays experienced by users throughout the weekend. Saturday evening, the 600 passengers of the Intercités Paris – Toulouse spent the night in their carriage and took nearly 18 hours to reach the Pink City because of two trees that fell on the tracks.

This Monday, more gusts of 80 to 100 km/h

This Sunday, returns from vacation were generally possible but trains were still delayed. This was the case of the TGV linking La Rochelle to Paris, in the morning, because of a tree that fell on the catenary. The SNCF indicated in the afternoon that its agents continued to intervene “to clear the tracks, clean the rails and repair the installations” in order to restore all traffic in the coming days. The weather could help them since the Météo France website does not forecast any new storms in the coming days, even if, this Monday, the wind will continue to blow on the shores of the Channel and the Atlantic with gusts that can reach 80 to 100 km/h.

“It is not abnormal that we have disturbed weather during this period, but what makes the situation special is its persistence,” summarizes Guillaume Séchet of the site meteo-villes.com. Fortunately, the regions affected by the storms will not experience new strong gales, at least nothing comparable to what we experienced. But there is no lasting dry weather in sight. There will be more rain and those who have had damaged roofs will have to cover again or the roofers will have to work. This could also cause problems in soils already saturated with water, with the risk of small floods. »
