At the end there are champagne and tears. At least at best. Until then, Sandra Hennig and Yvonne Emmerich have plenty to do under the roof. That’s where the bride comes before she gets under the hood: under the pine wood slants of a wedding dress studio in Neu-Anspach. Rapeseed fields and Taunus villages can be seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows. However, customers’ eyes are likely to be focused on the essentials in “The Bride Under the Roof”. So the clothes.

Almost all models on the temples shimmer in ivory; the style is sometimes simple, sometimes playful, sometimes sophisticated, but never too princess-like. “We don’t have the ten-meter glitter dress.” Instead, baroque and floral lace, a puristic clean look and also the right thing for barn weddings in boho style. The bright room is also decorated with the popular dried flowers. Emmerich used to live in the attic apartment – it is in her parents’ house. The two women opened the shop at the beginning of 2023.

Buying a wedding dress should be an experience. In the hallway, the bride and her companions, “often the mother,” take off their shoes. The tiles are heated, and mint-lemon lemonade is served for sofa conversations about ideas, clothing sizes and budgets. With 1,500 euros, customers are “in good hands” with them; the most expensive dress costs 2,700 euros, they say. After making an appointment on the phone, a few dresses are picked out. While the bride chooses, the relatives help themselves to a candy bar.

The business partners source all clothes from Europe from smaller labels. “We know the designers.” Sustainability is important to them; they also accept and sell second-hand clothes. Another option is mix and match: If the top and skirt are bought separately, they can also be worn individually after the wedding. An outfit like this can be had for around 700 euros. The appointments are free of charge and the studio is always open on Tuesday afternoons. At other times, the founders, 36 and 40 years old and personal friends for a long time, work part-time elsewhere.

If the bride knows what she wants to try, it goes into the magic ball. That’s the name of the locker room. Try size is usually 38, even if the dress doesn’t close at the back. The entrepreneurs then order the right size, and after another fitting, the dress goes to the seamstress to be shortened. The magic ball has two doors.

Through the first, a woman disappears in everyday clothing, through the second a “naturally beautiful bride” emerges – at least that is the claim and hope. Many people cry when they see themselves in the mirror, say Emmerich and Hennig. They then ask, “Is that your dress?” If the bride says yes, they hit a gong and uncork the bottle.
