Despite a quarter-final loss at the Malaysian Open, the world No. 7 men’s doubles pair of Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun remain resolute in their pursuit of victory against the No. 1 ranked team. The Malaysian duo fell to Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae at the Axiata Arena on Thursday, extending their head-to-head record to 0-6 against the formidable South Korean pair.
A Psychological Battle
On paper, the advantage clearly lay with Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae, who entered the match as the defending champions and fresh off a victory against Wei Chong and Kai Wun at the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou just two weeks prior. Despite fervent support from the home crowd, Wei Chong-Kai Wun were unable to secure a win, ultimately losing 17-21, 17-21.
Maintaining Confidence in the Face of Adversity
Despite the setback, Wei Chong expressed unwavering confidence in their ability to eventually overcome their rivals. “We have already lost to them many times, but we don’t dwell on that. Just because we’ve lost before doesn’t mean we lack confidence. We know we can do it. Every time we face them, we have a chance. We just need to take that chance and give our best,” he stated.
Strategic Shift Proves Decisive
Kai Wun acknowledged the strategic acumen of the South Korean team, noting their ability to adapt during the match. “At first, we were controlling the game, they were following our speed and doing what we wanted. But in the end, they were brave and switched their strategy. Maybe they played more slowly, point by point, which held us back. Towards the end, we started to have some doubts, tried too hard to win points, and made mistakes. It became too much for us,” he explained. This tactical adjustment proved crucial in securing the victory for Won-ho and Seung-jae.
Looking Ahead: Indian Open on the Horizon
Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae will advance to the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open today, where they will face India’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. Meanwhile, Wei Chong-Kai Wun will refocus their efforts on the Indian Open, traveling to New Delhi for the tournament which begins next Tuesday. They are scheduled to face fellow Malaysians Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong in the first round.
The pair’s determination to learn from each loss and continue striving for improvement signals a promising future for Malaysian men’s doubles badminton.
