Weight loss injections like Ozempic and Wegovy are on everyone’s lips. Since rapid weight loss was discovered as a side effect of diabetes medication, so many people have been prescribed the medication (or paid for it out of their own pocket) that manufacturer Novo Nordisk has become Europe’s most valuable company.

But for the fashion industry, all this losing weight could be really expensive.

As customer traffic declines more quickly and effectively, planning and purchasing for large department stores and retailers is becoming quite complicated, research from Impact Analytics found.

Ozempic complicates purchasing planning

The study warns that the previously common size and color planning for shopping in the coming seasons could soon become very inaccurate.

“1-2-2-1” is an often used example of the so-called size curves, some of which have been used unchanged for decades. Translated, this means, for example, that a sweater in a certain color is bought once in size XS, twice in size S, twice in M and once in L. The same can be applied to colors that have different levels of popularity in different sizes.

If the number of customers who would normally buy a size L is suddenly only half as large, a large proportion of the goods have to go on sale or even remain unsold – a loss for the shops.

Small profit margins, big loss potential

Profit margins are usually quite small, especially for department stores and retailers who get their goods at purchase price. That’s why it’s even more important that you sell a lot of goods before the sales, because they will be even smaller there.

► The authors of the study warn: If a retailer has a billion dollars in sales, it could lose up to $40 million just because of a small change in consumer behavior.

They advise retailers not to completely turn away from past patterns, but also to invest in technology that can monitor the dynamics of change in order to prepare for the coming seasons.

Important: Both medications have a strong impact on the body. Possible side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Therefore, you should never take semaglutide without medical advice.
