GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Linked to Notable Muscle loss, New Report Warns
Table of Contents
A comprehensive new review reveals that the rapid weight loss achieved through GLP-1 medications may come at a significant cost: substantial loss of lean muscle mass, potentially jeopardizing long-term health and mobility.
Nearly 2.5 million people in the United Kingdom are estimated to be using weight-loss drugs, with demand surging as medications like GLP-1 gain prominence. However,a report released jointly by Les Mills and ukactive cautions that without a dedicated focus on strength training, users risk losing 20 to 50 percent of their total weight loss as muscle, rather then fat.
The review, titled ‘GLP-1 medications and muscle mass preservation: Implications and recommendations for the health and fitness sector,’ confirms suspicions held by many trainers: significant weight loss induced by GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists frequently leads to unwanted consequences, most notably the depletion of muscle mass. This loss can lead to reduced strength, impaired mobility, and a slower metabolism, potentially undermining the long-term benefits of weight loss. The resulting frailty could add £2.3 billion annually to the NHS, could be exacerbated by medication-induced muscle wastage.
Strength Training: A Critical Component of GLP-1 Therapy
Fortunately, the solution is straightforward: integrating regular exercise, particularly strength training, into a GLP-1 treatment plan dramatically reduces these risks. Combining medication with exercise not onyl protects muscle mass but also supports sustained fat loss even after treatment concludes.
Current guidance from the Chief Medical Officer recommends two to three strength workouts per week, alongside 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) emphasizes that weight-loss drugs should not be used in isolation, but as part of a holistic plan encompassing diet, nutrition, and physical activity. Lifestyle support, the report stresses, is not optional-it is indeed essential.
Government Rollout Outpaces Support Infrastructure
The UK government initiated a nationwide rollout of GLP-1 last October, aiming to address severe obesity and improve workforce participation. Since then, the weight-loss market has experienced nearly 25% monthly growth. While momentum is strong, the necessary support infrastructure is lagging behind.
The report urges the government to convene leaders from the fitness, nutrition, and pharmaceutical industries to develop comprehensive support systems for GLP-1 users.Without such support, even well-intentioned rollout initiatives risk leaving millions physically weaker than before.
A Call to Action for the Fitness Industry
The report outlines specific steps for the health and fitness sector:
- Review existing programs to ensure they adequately support individuals on weight-loss medications.
- Forge stronger partnerships with nutrition and obesity specialists.
- Invest in staff training to enhance understanding of GLP-1’s mechanisms, side effects, and the programming of strength-focused sessions designed to protect users.
“Millions of people are taking weight loss medications across the UK but this evidence shows the risks of ignoring strength training and exercise during treatment,” said Dr.Matthew Wade, Interim Director of Research at ukactive. “The rapid rollout of GLP-1 has shown dramatic results for patients but in order to avoid weakening the body, there are simple and effective strength exercises which are essential for enduring results.”
Bryce Hastings, Head of Research at Les Mills, echoed this sentiment: “Regular strength training is vital to our health at all stages of life, but the research suggests this is especially true for people taking weight loss medications. Studies have shown this helps continue fat mass loss in the weight maintenance phase of treatment and lessen weight regain after treatment has stopped.” He added that further research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between weight loss medications and strength training.
GLP-1 medication can facilitate rapid weight loss, but without incorporating resistance training, users risk exchanging fat loss for a diminished physical state. This review underscores a critical point: medication alone is insufficient. muscle is non-negotiable.
