Meta Description: Health officials are warning against the dangers of buying weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro from unregulated sources amid a booming black market.
Losing weight is a common aspiration, especially at the start of a new year, but health experts are issuing stark warnings about the growing risks associated with purchasing medications for this purpose from social media sellers or other illegitimate channels. The demand for increasingly popular weight-loss injections, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, has fueled a dangerous surge in counterfeit products and illicit sales. Clinical trials suggest Mounjaro can definitely help individuals lose, on average, 20% of their body weight over 72 weeks of treatment, further driving demand.
Black Market Booms Amid Limited Access
Despite the promising results, access to these medications through the National Health Service (NHS) remains limited, a prescription is required, and the cost can be ample. This combination has created a fertile ground for a thriving black market. In response, the medicines and healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a fresh warning, emphasizing the critical importance of obtaining these medications only from registered UK pharmacies or legitimate retailers.
“Buying medicines from illegal online sellers can put your health at real risk,” stated a senior official from the MHRA’s safety and surveillance team. “always ensure you are using authorized products from legitimate sources and consult a healthcare professional for advice on safe, evidence-based options.”
Counterfeit Products Seized, Scams on the Rise
The scale of the problem is important. In October, the MHRA revealed the seizure of over £250,000 worth of counterfeit weight-loss jab products from a factory in Northampton. The haul included injection pens for retatrutide,an experimental drug currently not licensed for use in the UK.A subsequent examination by The guardian found that the company linked to these products, Alluvi Healthcare Ltd, continued to advertise replicas of retatrutide on multiple Telegram channels.
Financial institutions have also alerted the public to scams related to weight-loss medications, reporting that victims lose an average of £120 per incident. The MHRA has previously warned against purchasing prescription weight-loss medications from beauty salons, fraudulent pharmacy websites, and through unregulated social media posts – all illegal practices.
Key warning signs, according to the agency, include social media posts advertising unusually low prices, promises of “miracle results,” or “speedy fixes.”
Serious Health Risks Associated with Illicit Purchases
The dangers of buying from unregulated sources are multifaceted. The MHRA warns that such products could be counterfeit, contaminated, or contain incorrect dosages. Moreover, they may include unlisted ingredients that pose a significant threat to health. Experts also caution that illicit sellers may not adhere to proper storage protocols, potentially compromising the safety and effectiveness of the drugs if exposed to extreme temperatures or freezing conditions.
The health minister, Dr. Zubir Ahmed, delivered a clear message: “As a practicing doctor and patient safety minister, I want to be absolutely clear: please do not buy weight loss medications from unregulated sources. These products are made with no regard for safety or quality and pose a major risk to unwitting customers. Don’t line the pockets of criminals who don’t care about your health. Safe, appropriate, licensed obesity drugs can greatly benefit those with a clinical need but should be obtained from a registered pharmacy against
