Weight Loss Pens: Majority of Users Regain Lost Weight Within a Year, Study Finds
A new study reveals that 58% of individuals using popular weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro experience weight regain within one year of discontinuing treatment. The extensive research, presented at Obesity Week 2025 in Atlanta, underscores the challenges of maintaining weight loss achieved thru pharmaceutical intervention.
the study, conducted by researchers at New York University Langone Health, analyzed data from 1.2 million American adults between january 2010 and june 2024. Researchers focused on 18,228 individuals who had successfully lost at least 5% of their body weight with the aid of these medications. The findings align with previous clinical trials on semaglutide – the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy – which consistently demonstrate a pattern of weight regain following treatment cessation.
“Weight recovery is more pronounced among those who lost more weight during treatment,” a senior researcher stated. This suggests that the magnitude of initial weight loss may be a predictor of future regain.
The data indicates a gradual increase in weight gain over time after stopping the injections. Patients experienced an average weight gain of 4.5% at three months, increasing to almost 6% at six months. After a full year without medication, the average weight gain reached 7.5%. On average, patients were on the injections for just over eight months before stopping treatment.
The study population primarily consisted of adults with type 2 diabetes, with over half taking semaglutide, while the remainder used liraglutide or tirzepatide – the active ingredient in Mounjaro. These findings highlight the importance of long-term lifestyle interventions alongside pharmaceutical treatments for sustainable weight management.
The results emphasize that weight loss medications are most effective when combined with comprehensive strategies that address diet, exercise, and behavioral changes. Without continued support and lifestyle modifications, the risk of weight regain remains significant, even after significant initial success.
