Wei Chuan Dragons Announce Major Coaching Overhaul Ahead of 2026 Season
The Wei Chuan Dragons are poised for a significant shakeup of their first army coaching staff, signaling a new era for the Taiwanese baseball club. The changes come after a disappointing 2024 season, where the team finished fifth with a record of 55 wins and 64 losses.
The team’s performance this year fell short of expectations despite substantial investment in key players. Wei Chuan brought in free agents Zhu Yuxian and Chen Zihao, and welcomed back ace Xu Ruoxi after a suspension, alongside Wu Duo. However, these additions failed to translate into on-field success.
According to reports, the Dragons will be parting ways with several foreign coaches, including hitting coach Cruz, chief coach Yosuke Takasu, and pitching coordinator Roman. This represents the “biggest change in the coaching team in the new season,” a source close to the team stated.
Takasu’s Departure Marks End of Six-Year Tenure
Japanese coach Yosuke Takasu, who has been with the Ajitsu Dragons since 2020, progressing from infield fielding coach to chief coach, will be seeking a new opportunity. He concluded his six-year coaching stint with Ajitsu at the end of the current season. Roman, meanwhile, saw his time with Wei Chuan end after just one year.
The Dragons are actively pursuing replacements, with a strong focus on candidates with experience in the major league system. In addition to potential hires from the US, there is a “high chance” that Rakuten champion coach Koji Koji will join the team. The goal is to introduce a “different style of play” and propel the Dragons back to contention after a three-year absence from championship contention.
The coaching changes are occurring even as there is strong indication that Ye Junzhang will continue as head coach next year. However, the extensive overhaul of his support staff underscores the organization’s commitment to improvement and a fresh approach.
The Wei Chuan Dragons are clearly signaling a determination to rebuild and return to prominence in Taiwanese baseball. The coming months will be critical as they finalize their coaching staff and prepare for the 2026 season.
